Crohn’s Disease – Professor Thomas Borody Of Australia Comes To New York To Discuss Significant New Findings
This has emerged from research conducted by a group from Perth, one of whom was Dr Aileen Plant of the University of Western Australia’s Department of Public Health. Aileen Plant: What we were trying to find out was whether or not doctors knew that Helicobacter pylori, which we often call HP, was actually a cause of peptic ulcer disease. And then secondly, we were trying to find out whether or not different types of doctors, in other words, general practitioners versus gastroenterology specialists, whether they had different levels of knowledge and whether they actually did different things based on that knowledge. Norman Swan: Give us the knowledge that they were supposed to have and then let’s find out what they said. Aileen Plant: Well what they should have known was that Helicobacter pylori caused peptic ulcers in particular, HP causes about 95% of duodenal ulcers and about 70% of gastric ulcers. Norman Swan: Stomach ulcers. Aileen Plant: Yes, stomach ulcers. And the second thing we’re asking them about, Do they normally treat that as an infectious disease, and should they treat it, and what they should do after that. Norman Swan: Who did you ask? Aileen Plant: We asked a whole range of people, general practitioners, infectious disease doctors, gastroenterologists and gastroenterological surgeons. In other words, the kind of doctors that should have actually known about this problem.
